Pio Leads, Bison Third After First Day at ECAC Championships

FARMINGTON, Conn. (Oct. 3) – Nichols College senior Pat Pio (Somers, Conn.) is tied for the lead after the first round of play at the 2009 ECAC Division III Men's New England Golf Championships Saturday. The first round was suspended due to inclement weather late in the first round of the two day championship at Tunxis Plantation Country Club on Saturday. Eleven of the fourteen teams completed first round play, with Nichols standing in third place.

 

Johnson & Wales University and University of Massachusetts-Dartmouth currently lead the field with a score of 309.  Pio and Bobby Newcomb of Johnson & Wales each hit par (72) to finish on top of the individual leader board.

 

First year Nick Deni (Enfield, Conn.) continues his impressive debut season, completing the first round tied for third with a one-over par 73. Bruce Carter, Jr. (Worcester, Mass.) and Shawn Santos (Agawam, Mass.) stood tied for 34th with an 86, while Dan Cafasso (Prospect, Conn.) was one stroke back tied for 39th.

 

Play was suspended for Brandeis University, Castleton State College and Endicott College due to inclement weather.  Brandeis, Castleton and Endicott will complete first round play at 8:00 a.m. on Sunday, October 4 and move onto the second round at 9:00 a.m.
