Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Four Nichols College players scored in double figures as the Bison rallied to defeat Connecticut College, 69-64, Tuesday evening at Luce Fieldhouse. Senior guard MaryLynn Skarzenski (Woodbridge, N.J.) led Nichols (3-2) with 13 points and added four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
Nichols capitalized on Connecticut College's errors, scoring 25 points off of the Camels' 21 turnovers, including 12 points in the second frame, The Bison also held a 16-8 advantage in points in the paint, led by a 12 points from sophomore forward Jessica Nelson (No. Providence, R.I.), who added a team-high seven rebounds,
Down 33-29 at the start of the second half, Nichols chipped away at the Camels' lead and tied it up after Curtia Humbert (Bridgeport, Conn.) picked off a pass and brought it all the way down to the other end for an easy basket, knotting the game at 35-35 less than three minutes into the frame.
The teams traded baskets and the lead five times before the Bison went on a 5-0 run midway through the half, led in part by nine points in nine minutes from first-year forward Lena Fracassini (Bridgeport, Conn.). She also added four rebounds in the span.
After the Camels tied it back up, the Bison went ahead for good with five minutes left, taking a six-point lead within a minute and a half.
Nichols maintained the lead, despite a late Kim Horne three-pointer that brought the Camels within striking distance, and a pair of Humbert free throws with four seconds left sealed the game.
The Camels led by as many as 12 in the first half, but the Bison rallied to bring the score within two three minutes left in the opening stanza, and after Connecticut College again went ahead by 10 with 1:41 remaining, Nichols shot just 38.7% in the first half.
Junior forward Margaret Lilly (Ashfield, Mass.) chipped in with 11 points and five rebounds for the Bison, while Michele Guerin (Chicopee, Mass.) added 10 of Nichols' 22 points off the bench.
Junior guard Emily Cummings paced the Camels (0-4) with a game-high 18 points on 7-for-11 shooting with a pair of three pointers. Kim Horne added 14 points off the bench, while Amy Towne chipped in with 12 points and a game-high eight rebounds.
The Bison are back in action in a 6 p.m. game at Fitchburg State on Tuesday.
