Salve Regina Gets Past Field Hockey in Penalty Strokes, 2-1, in TCCC Quarterfinals

Box Score

DUDLEY, Mass. -- The sixth-seeded Salve Regina field hockey team upset third-seeded Nichols College, 2-1, in penalty strokes Saturday afternoon in the quarterfinal round of The Commonwealth Coast Conference Championship Tournament. Sophomore Jillian Stanley (Watertown, Conn.) scored on the Seahawks' fifth stroke to give Salve Regina the win and Seahawks' goalkeeper Devin Eppley (Darien, Conn.) followed up the goal by denying Nichols' final attempt, capping a 17-save day for the junior.

Salve Regina (7-12, 3-5 TCCC) advances to the TCCC Semifinals to face second-seed New England College (15-4, 7-1 TCCC) on Wednesday, November 5, at 1:30 p.m. in Henniker, N.H.

Nichols had several early opportunities to go ahead in the first half, but they were unable to put their shots in the net. Senior Captain Brittany Case (Cambridge, N.Y.) found herself on a breakaway with 18:16 remaining in the first when her shot was denied by Eppley. Again Case had a chance just two minutes later when she received a pass in front of the net; her shot was saved and went straight up in the air, after which the Seahawks defense safely cleared it.

With 5:20 on the clock in the first the Seahawks recorded their first shot and capitalized on it as junior Samantha Wolfe (East Bridgewater, Mass.) knocked in a quick pass from sophomore Ali Campagna (West Hartford, Conn.).

In the second half Nichols had many more chances, and sophomore midfielder Amber Cottrell (Hoosick Falls, N.Y.) put away a penalty stroke into the left corner off of Eppley's blocker just over 14 minutes into the half to knot the game.

In the second overtime Nichols was able to get two-man breakaway with 2:59 remaining as Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) and Case sprinted toward Eppley unopposed. Correia passed across to Case on the right, but the senior's shot went just wide.

Nichols junior goalkeeper MaryKate Bednarz (Springfield, Mass.) made one save in the loss and made 17 saves to pick up the win.

Nichols finishes the season at 9-10 overall and 5-3 in TCCC action.
