Bison ground Seahawks for first-ever CCC playoff win

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Freshman CJ Cadigan scored the game-winning goal with 5:31 remaining in regulation to lift the Nichols College men's lacrosse team to its first-ever Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) playoff win, a 10-9 triumph over Salve Regina University Saturday afternoon in the Quarterfinals at Gaudet Field.

Senior and CCC First Team selection Cian Keohane and junior Ryan Warner each scored three times as the Bison (8-10), who saw freshman Brady Morgan record nine saves – several of them of the spectacular variety. Senior and CCC Third Team selection Hunter Ferreira and Cadigan each found the back of the net twice. Keohane, meanwhile, broke David French's 48-year old single-season goal record with his 52nd early in the fourth.

The Bison trailed 5-2 early in the second quarter before goals from Warner at 10:40 and Ferreira at 3:18 brought them to within one (5-4) at the break. The schools traded goals in the third as the Seahawks (7-8) carried a 7-6 lead into the fourth.

Nichols ripped off three-straight goals to start the final stanza to grab a 9-7 lead as Keohane, Ferreira, and Warner tickled the twine. Salve Regina answered with two, tying the game with 6:21 remaining in regulation. After Cadigan put the Bison ahead in the fourth, the team killed off a one-minute penalty. The Seahawks failed to score on their final possession, and Warner ran out the final 1:19 on the clock.

Sophomore and CCC Third Team honoree Nick Gualtieri picked up four ground balls for NC, which was second to fellow CCC Third Team pick Scott Ehrenberg, who notched six while winning 11-of-21 at the X. Gualtieri and sophomore Cooper Melvin each caused a pair of turnovers.

The Bison head to Springfield, Mass. for a date with top-seeded Western New England on Wednesday, May 4 at 4:00 p.m.
