Bison fall one run short in playoff loss at Roger Williams, 3-2

BRISTOL, R.I. – Senior Emalee Watkins (Malden, Mass.) and freshman Meghan Sears (Tewksbury, Mass.) each recorded an RBI in Nichols College's 3-2 loss at Roger Williams University Sunday morning in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) play-in round at Paolino Field.

Trailing 3-1 entering the seventh, freshman Christina Drake (Lebanon, N.H.) led off with a double to left-center. Sophomore Haley Fountain (Warren, Mass.) followed with a single to put runners on the corners with no one out, and Sears followed with an RBI double to plate Drake to cut the Nichols deficit to one at 3-2. Sophomore pinch-runner Victoria Utter (Stafford Springs, Conn.) was thrown out at the plate on a fielders choice for the first out before junior Janine Coleman (Roslindale, Mass.) saw her hard-hit grounder turned into a 4-3 double play to end the contest.

The Hawks struck for three runs in the second on a two-run double off the bat of freshman Meredith Moise (North Reading, Mass.) and an RBI single from classmate Mikaela Grosso (West Warwick, R.I.). The Bison got one back in the third on an RBI single from Watkins that made it 3-1.

Sophomore Meghan Maliga (Suffield, Conn.) earned her 12th win of the year, allowing five hits and two runs in seven innings. Freshman Samantha Mittel (Palm Coast, Fla.) was 2-for-3 for RWU. Fountain took the loss as she was tagged for seven hits and three runs with two walks and four strikeouts in six innings.

Nichols finishes its season 12-21. Sixth-seeded Roger Williams advances to play No. 3 seed Curry in Newport, R.I. on Tuesday at 2:30 p.m.
