Box Score
CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Freshman
Meghan Sears (Tewksbury, Mass.) drove in a pair of runs as the Nichols College softball team earned their third win of the spring with a 7-3 triumph over Knox College Wednesday morning at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
Both Sears and sophomore
Haley Fountain (Warren, Mass.) went 3-for-4 on the afternoon as the Bison (3-4) pounded out 11 hits. Senior
Emalee Watkins (Malden, Mass.) and freshman
Christina Barrows (Carver, Mass.) each went 2-for-4 and scored a run.
Nichols put a crooked number on the board in the second, scoring three times to take a 3-1 lead. Sears doubled to center to plate Fountain with the first run, and junior
Janine Coleman (Roslindale, Mass.) brought two home when her sharp ground ball at the shortstop could not be handled.
Knox got one back in the fifth to make it a 4-2 game before the Bison scored three times in the sixth to take a 7-2 lead. Junior
Rachel Dalrymple (Belvidere, N.J.) dropped down a sac bunt that led to a throwing error, allowing Barrows to come around and score from second. Watkins then legged out a grounder to third that plated Dalrymple (unearned), followed by an RBI groundout from junior
Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.). Knox answered with one in the sixth to account for the final score.
Fountain went the distance in the circle to earn her second win of the season. She scattered six hits and allowed three runs (one earned) with no walks and five strikeouts.
The Bison play Wooster later this afternoon.
