CAPE CORAL, Fla. – The Nichols College softball team rallied back from a 5-1 season-opening loss to SUNY Oneonta to score a walk-off 3-2 win over Nazareth Friday afternoon at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.
Freshman
Christina Drake (Lebanon, N.H.) went 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored against the Golden Flyers (3-7). She sent the Bison home with a 'W' when she hit a grounder to third that was bobbled in the bottom of the seventh, allowing junior
Rachel Dalrymple (Belvidere, N.J.) to score the winning run from third.
Freshman
Meghan Sears (Tewksbury, Mass.) went the distance to earn a win in her collegiate debut, allowing four hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out seven. She also went 1-for-2 at the dish with an RBI.
In the opener, sophomore
Haley Fountain (Warren, Mass.) broke up the Red Dragons no-hit bid with a one-out single to center in the seventh, followed two batters later by an RBI single off the bat of classmate
Jordan D'Aurio (Northford, Conn.).
Fountain surrendered 12 hits and five runs (four earned) in seven innings of work against SUNY Oneonta. She did not walk a batter and fanned two.
Nichols plays Pitt.-Bradford Saturday morning at 9 a.m. and St. Joseph's (ME) at 1 p.m. in Fort Myers, Fla. Â
