Box Score RYE, N.Y. – The Nichols College women's ice hockey team fell to Manhattanville 5-0 in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) East action Friday afternoon at the Playland Ice Casino.
The Bison upset the Valiants in early December last season 4-3 for the biggest win in school history, however, history would not repeat itself.
Manhattanville (1-2-0, 1-0-0 ECACE) got off to a fast start, potting four goals in the first period. Freshman Cassandra Kent (Lake Placid, N.Y.) got things started at 4:39, potting the first goal of her collegiate career. She was assisted on the play by senior Aubrey Bachand (Harwichport, Mass.).
The Valiants added another just a minute later when junior Kyra Herbert (Plainfield, N.H.) slipped one past senior goaltender
Tori Gianformaggio (Huntington Beach, Calif.) to make the score 2-0. Senior Alla Traun (Edina, Minn.), who scored a goal in both meetings with the Bison last season, along with classmate Michelle Meggiolaro (Whippany, N.J.) were credited with assists on the goal.
Traun and Meggiolaro added goals towards the end of the first stanza to take a 4-0 lead into the second period.
Herbert scored her second goal of the game at 12:29 of the second period to put the Valiants up 5-0. Traun, who got her third point of the game, and senior Rachel Morrison (Ridgefield, Conn.) both were tabbed with assists on the play.
Nichols (2-1-1, 0-1-0 ECACE) was paced by senior
Grace Murphy (Monclair, Va.) with five shots while classmate
Jordan Fencl (Amana, Iowa) added two. Meggiolaro led all Valiants with six shots.
Gianformaggio – the defending ECAC East Goaltender of the Week – gave up all five goals and stopped 20 shots while falling to 2-1-0 on the season before giving way to freshman
Lindsay O'Connell (Danvers, Mass.) in the third period. O'Connell had 15 saves in her collegiate debut. Senior Kristen Shaughnessy (Le Center, Minn.) had thirteen saves and improves to 1-1-0 on the year.
The Bison travel to take on conference foe Salve Regina Saturday at 7:30 p.m. The Valiants host Salve Regina next Friday at 7:00 p.m.
