DUDLEY, Mass. – The Nichols College women's tennis remained undefeated in the Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) with a 6-3 win over Gordon College Saturday afternoon at the Robinson Tennis Courts.
The day started off great for the Bison, taking two of three in the doubles matches. The No. 1 doubles team of senior Anna Dyakiv (Amsterdam, N.Y.) and freshman Cristina Szepanski (Windsor Locks, Conn.) defeated freshman Cindi Flynn (Bangor, Maine) and her classmate Caroline Hall (Corona, Calif.), 8-6.
Junior Lindsay Benoit (Holden, Mass.) and freshman Emma Carey (Venice, Fla.) defeated sophomores Lily Drescher (Wayland, Mass.) and Tawnie Yeaw (Foothill Ranch, Calif.) in No. 2 doubles action 8-4.
The Fighting Scots picked up their lone doubles win at No. 3 doubles when senior Jessie Dupre (Branford, Conn.) and senior Abby Caron (Uxbridge, Mass.) defeated senior Erin Rivers (Bristol, R.I.) and sophomore Michelle Keklik (Stratford, Conn.), 8-4.
At No. 1 singles, Hall defeated Dyakiv – the reigning CCC Player of the Week – in straight sets 6-3, 6-3. This marks the first time Dyakiv has lost since the first match of the year against Wheaton, where she played in the No. 2 spot.
Nichols had no trouble at No. 2 or No. 3 singles with Benoit defeating Yeaw 6-1, 6-0, followed by Szepanski getting the best of Drescher 6-2, 6-3. Gordon's Flynn defeated Carey 6-3, 7-5 in the No. 4 spot.
Nichols junior Kelsey Peterson (Fairbanks, Alaska) won at No. 5 singles, defeating freshman Rebecca Levy (Plymouth, Mass.) 6-0, 6-2, while at No. 6, junior Katie Malloy (Norwell, Mass.) finished 6-1, 6-4 over freshman Hannah Damon (Norwich, Vt.).
"This is a very solid win against a very good team," said Nichols head coach Paul Brower. "Gordon has three stellar new players, and we were able to counter them. Anna and Cristina played their best doubles match of the season by far. Lindsey and Emma looked fantastic as well. On the singles side, their No. 1 is very impressive. Anna fought her very hard, but unfortunately, didn't come away with the win. Lindsey was tremendous, as well as Kelsey Peterson. She played her best match in years down at No. 5. Cristina Szepanski had a great effort as well. This is a solid all-around team win. Now, we have to take the next step against Roger Williams."
The Bison (6-2, 4-0 CCC) travel to Bristol, R.I. to take on Roger Williams on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. The Fighting Scots will host Curry on Tuesday at 4:00 p.m.
