SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Freshman
Danielle White (Boston, Mass.) belted a three-run home run in her collegiate debut for the Nichols College softball team, which lost a pair of games at Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) foe Western New England Wednesday afternoon. The Golden Bears won game one, 15-1, in five innings before rallying for a 10-3 win in game two.
Sophomore
Caitlyn O'Loughlin (Waterford, Conn.) recorded a pair of hits in game two for the Bison (2-12, 0-4 CCC), who were hurt by eight errors on the afternoon (three in game one, five in game two). With the wins, the Golden Bears move to 10-7 (4-0 CCC).
Western New England scored 12 runs in the third inning of game one to turn a 2-0 lead into a 14-0 lead. Sophomore Hannah Hill (Malden, Mass.) laced a two-run double and, later in the frame, freshman Alexis Burkowski (Wallingford, Conn.) plated a pair with a single up the middle.
In the circle, sophomore Lauren Zambrano (Wallingford, Conn.) held Nichols to one hit and one run over four innings, striking out four to move to 8-2 on the season. Sophomore
Lindsay Rappazzo (Mashpee, Mass.) took the loss for the Bison as she allowed seven runs on five hits in 2.1 innings.
In the nightcap, White broke a scoreless tie with a three-run home run over the left field wall that brought in O'Loughlin and junior
Amanda Broughton (Plymouth, Mass.) and gave Nichols a 3-0 lead. In the circle, White was cruising along until the fifth, when she surrendered five hits and eight runs (three earned) as the Golden Bears took an 8-3 lead. The inning was highlighted by junior Maria Francesse's (Hinsdale, Mass.) two-run double to right field.
White fell to 0-1 with the loss, finishing with a line of 13 hits and 10 runs (five earned) with one walk and four strikeouts. Freshman Leah Torre (Guilford, Conn.) moved to 2-4 with the win, allowing six hits and three runs with six strikeouts in five innings of work.
The Bison are back in action on Saturday when they host Wentworth at noon. The Golden Bears host Trinity (CT) Thursday at 3 p.m.
