Nor'easters take Sunday DH from Bison

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

DUDLEY, Mass. – Junior Emalee Watkins (Malden, Mass.) and freshman Jordan D'Aurio (Northford, Conn.) each recorded an RBI as Nichols College dropped a pair of games to the University of New England in Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) action Sunday afternoon at the Nichols Softball Complex. The Nor'easters won game one, 6-2, and game two, 7-2.

Junior Allie Frazier (Dracut, Mass.) drove in three runs in the opener and senior Casey Brigham (New London, Conn.) went 2-for-2 with two RBI and two runs scored in the nightcap as the Nor'easters moved to 21-14-1 (12-6 CCC) with the wins.

Each team scored an unearned run in the first inning of the opener before an RBI single from Frazier in the second gave UNE a 2-1 lead. The Bison evened the score in their half of the frame as sophomore Rachel Dalrymple (Belvidere, N.J.) scampered home on a ground ball hit by Watkins.

The score remained tied until the fifth when senior Megan Gauger (South Paris, Maine) lifted a sac fly to right to plate the go-ahead run. The Nor'easters scored three more runs in the sixth on a two-run single from Frazier and an RBI single by sophomore Adrienne Chase (Holden, Mass.).

Freshman Abby Lambert (Brockton, Mass.) earned the win in game one to improve to 8-4 on the season. She held the Bison to three hits and two unearned runs while striking out six over seven innings. Sophomore Taylor Ferrazzi (Ashland, Mass.) took the loss as she surrendered 11 hits and six runs (four earned) in seven innings.

The Nor'easters struck for four unearned runs in the second inning of game two to grab the early lead. Brigham drove in two with a single through the right side before scoring on a wild pitch. Freshman Jess Lemos (Chelmsford, Mass.) then singled through the left side to bring in the fourth run of the frame.

An RBI single by Gauger in the fourth and one from Frazier in the fifth extended the UNE lead to 6-0. Nichols struck for two in the fifth behind an RBI single from Watkins and a sac fly from D'Aurio to cut the deficit to four, and UNE freshman Meghan Bolano (Wakefield, Mass.) led off the seventh with a long home run to left field to close the scoring.

Freshman Danielle White (Boston, Mass.) took the loss for Nichols, surrendering six hits and five runs (one earned) in three innings of work. Freshman Lauren Doneski (Waltham, Mass.) tossed a complete game, six-hitter to earn her eighth win of the season. She walked three and fanned seven.

The Bison (5-25, 3-12 CCC) are scheduled to return to action this Thursday against non-conference foe Fitchburg State, but may play their CCC doubleheader against Eastern Nazarene – which was cancelled yesterday – prior to then. UNE closes its regular season with a 3:30 p.m. DH against Bowdoin on Tuesday.
