Seahawks sweep Bison in CCC opener

NEWPORT, R.I. – The Nichols College softball team suffered a pair of losses in their Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) opener at Salve Regina University Tuesday afternoon, falling 11-3 in five innings in game one and 8-1 in game two.

In the opener, sophomore Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) laced an RBI triple to drive in the Bison's first run, followed by an RBI single off the bat of junior Amanda Broughton (Plymouth, Mass.) and an RBI groundout from sophomore Kaylee McNamara (Watertown, Mass.). In the nightcap, sophomore Janine Coleman (Roslindale, Mass.) drove in the only Nichols run with an RBI single in the second.

Sophomore Lauren Nicholson (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) went 2-for-2 with 4 in the opener for the Seahawks (9-7, 4-0 ccc) while junior Sara Nelson (Bristol, Conn.) and freshman Melissa Figueiredo (East Bridgewater, Mass.) each plated a pair of runs. In game two, senior Jillian Quintana (Denver, Colo.), junior Marissa Simpson (Brimfield, Mass.), and Nelson each recorded two RBI.

Nichols junior starting pitcher Rebecca Waszczuk (Chester, N.H.) surrendered nine hits and 11 runs (10 earned) in 1.1 innings of work in the opener to fall to 0-3 on the season. Sophomore Lindsay Rappazzo (Mashpee, Mass.) got the call in game two and gave up seven hits and seven runs (four earned) with two walks and one strikeout in 4.2 IP. With the loss, Rappazzo falls to 1-3.

Senior Jen Cruver (North Haven, Conn.) picked up a pair of wins in the circle for Salve Regina to improve to 9-7 on the season. In game one, she scattered four hits and allowed three runs (two earned) with three strikeouts over five innings of work before allowing five hits and one with run four strikeouts in game two.

The Bison (2-10, 0-2 ccc) return to action on Thursday with a doubleheader at Clark (MA) at 3 p.m. The Seahawks host UMass Dartmouth Thursday at 4 p.m.
