Bison rally past Knox, fall to Wis.-Superior

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

FORT MYERS, Fla. – Junior Amanda Broughton (Plymouth, Mass.) drove in three runs in Nichols College's 10-8 come-from-behind win over Knox College Tuesday morning at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic at Lee Sports Complex. The Bison were later blanked by Wis.-Superior, 7-0.

Sophomore Avery Orszulak (Springfield, Mass.) went 5-for-7 on the day – including 3-for-4 against the Prairie Fire (0-3) – as the Bison scored twice in the fifth and five times in the sixth to turn a 6-3 deficit into a 10-6 lead.

After an RBI groundout by sophomore Rachel Dalrymple (Belvidere, N.J.) cut Nichols deficit to 6-5, Broughton laced a two-run single up the middle to out Nichols ahead 7-6.  Junior Emalee Watkins (Malden, Mass.) then singled to push Broughton to third before a throwing error allowed both to move up 90 feet and stretch the lead to 8-6. Watkins later scored on a wild pitch to make it 9-6, and sophomore Janine Coleman's (Roslindale, Mass.) second hit of the afternoon plated Orszulak to cap the scoring in the frame.

Knox scored twice in the seventh to cut the Bison lead to 10-8 and had the bases loaded with one down before sophomore starting pitcher Taylor Ferrazzi (Ashland, Mass.) recorded the final outs on a runner's interference call and a pop to second. She allowed 13 hits and eight runs (two earned) in seven innings of work with one walk and three strikeouts to earn her first win of 2013. Watkins, meanwhile, finished the game with three hits and two runs scored.

Against Wis.-Superior, sophomore Lindsay Rappazzo (Mashpee, Mass.) worked seven innings and allowed 11 hits and seven runs (four earned) with four walks and one strikeout. Orszulak was 2-for-3.

"Our bats came alive in the first game," said Bison head coach Kristan Mallet. "We're still making forced errors which are leading to unearned runs, and that is hurting us right now. Overall, though, I was happy with our offensive output in the first game. In the second game, we ran into a quality opponent, a team that hits well and plays sound defense. We made a lot of nice defensive plays in the game."

The Bison (2-6) complete their trip south with a 9 a.m. contest against Hamilton on Wednesday morning, followed by an 11 a.m. contest against North Central (IL) at 11 a.m. The Yellow Jackets were set to face North Central (IL) later this afternoon while Knox was on the losing end of a 7-3 score to UMass Dartmouth.
