Bison toppled by Warriors, 7-2

Box Score

CAPE CORAL, Fla. – Junior Janine Coleman (Roslindale, Mass.) laced an RBI double in Nichols College's 7-2 loss to Wis.-Lutheran at the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic Saturday morning at the Cape Coral Sports Complex.

Coleman was one of five Nichols student-athletes to record a hit in the contest while sophomore Taylor Ferrazzi (Ashland, Mass.) surrendered eight hits and seven runs (six earned) over seven innings. She walked four and struck out two to fall to 0-2 on the season.

Junior Jinny Curtis (Muskego, Wis.) went 3-for-4 with two RBI and two runs scored to lead the Warriors (5-4) while freshmen Tara Degl'Innocenti (Lisle, Ill.) and Bekah Shellberg (Burlington, Wis.) each picked up an RBI in the win. In the circle, Shellberg held the Bison (1-2) to four hits and no runs while striking out four over six innings of work.

The Warriors took a 1-0 lead in the first on an RBI double off the bat of Degl'Innocen. After pushing across a second run on a sac bunt in the second, they put up a '3' spot in the fifth to open up a 5-0 lead, highlighted by an RBI single from Curtis. Two more runs in the seventh gave Wis.-Lutheran a 7-0 advantage.

In the seventh, freshman Libby Larsen (Menasha, Wis.) came on in relief of Shellberg and tossed three wild pitches, one of which allowed freshman Kaylee McNamara (Watertown, Mass.) to score the Bison's first run. Two batters later, Coleman's double to the gap in right-center plated freshman Patricia Stacy (Pembroke, Mass.) and made the score 7-2.

Nichols returns to action Saturday afternoon with a 1 p.m. contest against Polytechnic (NY). Wis.-Lutheran was set to play Brockport at 11 a.m.
