Bison set to face national champions following 94-74 win over Beacons

AMHERST, Mass. – The Nichols College men's basketball team advanced to the championship game of the Ken Wright Invitational Tournament by virtue of a 94-74 win over UMass Boston Friday night at LaFrak Gymnasium on the campus of Amherst College.

Nichols (2-1) advances to play defending Division III National Champion Amherst in the finals Saturday at 3 p.m. Earlier in the day, the top-ranked Lord Jeffs downed Newbury 99-65.

Senior captain Ryan Sheehan (North Attleboro, Mass.) led all scorers with 31 points and was one of five Bison in double-figures in scoring. Junior Matt Langadas (Sebago, Maine) chipped in with 14 points while classmate Marlon Bennett (Stratford, Conn.) added 13, sophomore Jalen Hurst (Hartford, Conn.) scored 11, and senior Sam Horning (Falmouth, Maine) netted 10.

The Bison turned 24 turnovers into 26 points and knocked down 13 three-pointers, led by four each from Sheehan and Bennett. Junior big man Joe Gallant (Salem, N.H.) dished out a game-high five assists while Sheehan had four. Langadas racked up three steals.

The Beacons (0-1) received 19 points and 11 rebounds from Carl Joseph. Gregory Young added 16 points while Selim Omerovic registered 14 points. They committed 24 turnovers in their season-opener and shot just 38 percent from the field. UMB did outrebound the Bison46-40.
