Nichols Downed by St. Anselm, 8-3

Murphy extends point-scoring streak to five games

Box Score

MANCHESTER, N.H. – Nichols College sophomore Lisa Coskren (Norwood, Mass.) scored a pair of goals as the women's ice hockey team fell to St. Anselm, 8-3, on Saturday in an ECAC East matchup at Sullivan Arena. Classmate Grace Murphy (Montclair, Va.) extended her point-scoring streak to five games while setting the Bison record for power play goals in a season with her sixth and, at the same time, tied Mandy Manopla '12 for the career lead with eight.

Junior Courtney Winters (Swampscott, Mass.) paced the Hawks with a hat-trick and an assist as the squad hosted day two of 'Pink in the Rink' weekend, raising funds and awareness for breast cancer.

Winters staked claim on a 1-0 lead for the Hawks at 5:32 of the opening frame when she ripped a slap shot from the right point that traveled through traffic and into the left side of the net. Junior Andi Foss (Elko, Minn.) and freshman Kelsey Patten (Mundelein, Ill.) were each credited with assists on the play. At the 7:11 mark of the frame, Nichols netted the equalizer to knot things up at one apiece when Murphy picked up her 13th goal of the season on a Bison power play. Sophomore Tawny Buelow (Willow Grove, Pa.) took the initial shot that was saved by Saint Anselm sophomore goaltender Janice Michaud (Westwood, Mass.) before Murphy picked up the rebound and shoveled it past Michaud's right side. Saint Anselm took a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission thanks to a goal from senior Kathryn Picarello (West Roxbury, Mass) at the 17:36 mark. Senior Rosemarie Giarrusso (Royal Palm Beach, Fla.) rifled a shot from the left circle that was tipped in by Picarello, at the left post.

The second frame featured seven goals, five for the Hawks and a pair for Nichols bringing the score to 7-3 after two periods of play. Just 1:32 into the period, Winters buried the rebound off freshman Alex Kazmer's (Crystal Lake, Ill.) initial shot, which started the scoring frenzy. Foss picked up her second assist of the day on the sequence. Nichols came through with the answer when Coskren skated away from the pack on a breakaway and past a Saint Anselm defender. She snuck the puck past Michaud's left side making it a 3-2 game at the 5:17 mark of the second stanza. Just under two minutes later, Kazmer recorded her first tally of the contest when she shoveled in a rebound off the pads of Bison junior netminder Francesca Palazzo (Bernardston, Mass.) at 7:16. Winters and sophomore Tiffany Herron (Clinton Township, Mich.) each picked up a helper on the play. Herron put the Hawks up 5-2 as she potted her eighth goal of the season on feeds from Kazmer and junior Jacqueline Bouchie (Belmont, Mass.). Nichols answered back 12 seconds later when Coskren notched her second goal of the game on a pass from Murphy at 10:14. Freshman Sarah Geisinger (Willoughby, Ohio) was next to score for Hawks at 15:16 when she received a pass from Giarrusso and sent the puck to the back of the net doubling up the Hawks' lead at 6-3. Winters completed her trifecta when she skated away on a breakaway, deked the Nichols goalie from left to right and flipped a backhand shot into the right side. Kazmer and rookie Jessica Galiczewski (Kings Park, N.Y.) earned assists on the play.

Foss' goal at 6:30 of the third period to cap the scoring as she sent a rip from the right point that rocketed into the back of the net.
Michaud made 21 saves, while Palazzo and first-year Nia Kelly (Cary, N.C.) combined for 49 saves.
The Hawks held a 57-24 advantage in shots on goal.

Nichols (3-15-1, 1-10-1 ECACE) travels to New England College in Henniker, N.H. on Friday for a 4:00 p.m. faceoff while St. Anselm (12-4-3, 8-2-3 ECACE) makes the trip to Holy Cross for a 7:00 p.m. contest.
