Seniors, Softball Sweep Eastern Nazarene

Ferraro key in circle, at plate

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DUDLEY, Mass. (April 21) – The Nichols College softball team swept visiting Eastern Nazarene Saturday by scores of 3-1 and 11-3 (five innings) in Commonwealth Coast Conference action. It was senior day for the Bison, who were led by a pair of wins in the circle from Molly Ferraro, who also went 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, an RBI single and a pair of runs scored in game two.

Senior second baseman Savannah Thibault finished the day 5-for-7 with three runs scored and a two-run double in the nightcap, while classmate Kylie Langton was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI in the opener.

Nichols got out of a bases-loaded jam in the second, and saw Langton cross the plate in the fourth on an errant play at the plate after hitting a one-out double.

Eastern Nazarene answered in the top of the third with a two-out RBI single from Kori Sorensen, but Ferraro induced a groundout- one of 10 in the game- to end the inning.

Nichols took the lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring on an Emalee Watkins single, and then when Langton drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs.

The Lions threatened in the sixth as Jamie Block hit her second double of the game and advanced on a groundout, but a heads-up foul pop snag by senior catcher Chelsea Correia put two outs on the board, and senior Lauren Correia ended the inning with a catch in center field.

Ferraro scattered eight hits while striking out four and walking one to get the win, while Sorensen shouldered the loss with seven hits, three walks, five strikeouts and three unearned runs.

Ferraro was more effective in the nightcap, allowing just four hits and walking one while fanning three. Her counterpart, Carissa Cicolini surrendered nine hits while walking fo¬ur and tossing three wild pitches.

Nichols commanded a 3-0 lead in the Bison's first at-bat, using just two hits – singles from Thibault and Chelsea Correia – to get there. Nichols added three more in the second, using back-to-back doubles from Ferraro and Thibault and an RBI groundout from Watkins to push the runs across.

The Lions got one hit in the third, but it was the Bison who batted around in the frame, adding five runs to their lead. Langton and Lauren Correia led off with walks before Rachel Dalrymple reached on a fielder's choice. Avery Orszulak plated one via error and then Ferraro drove in another with a single. Thibault and Amanda Broughton followed with singles to score another before Watkins drew a bases-loaded walk to score the fourth of the frame. The three baserunners then took advantage of a wild pitch to see Thibault cross the plate for an 11-0 lead after three.

Eastern Nazarene posted a two-out rally in the fifth, using a walk and a single to set up a run-scoring double from Samantha Losano. Taylor Fleming followed with a two-run single before Ferraro got her third strikeout of the inning to end the game.

Nichols travels to University of New England Sunday for its CCC finale, facing the Nor'easters for a pair starting at noon. Eastern Nazarene wraps up the CCC season Tuesday with a home doubleheader against Wentworth at 3 p.m.
