Box Score DUDLEY, Mass. (Apr. 19) – Sophomore Michael Dwyer and junior Matthew Clawson combined to go 6-for-11 at the plate while teaming up for five RBI and seven runs scored as Newbury defeated host Nichols College 17-7 in a non-conference baseball game on Thursday afternoon. The Nighthawks improve to 18-15 while the Bison slip to 6-18
Newbury senior Patrick Curry drove in the first run of the contest as he lifted a sacrifice fly to right field. Senior Alex Cheleat then cleared the fence for a two-run shot and a 3-0 Nighthawks lead.
After the Bison turned one of their four double plays of the afternoon, Newbury then used a single and a free pass set the stage for a 2-RBI double off the bat of Curry in the second.
Newbury put up six runs in the third inning highlighted by a 3-RBI triple by Dwyer.
Senior
Richie Burke broke through for the Bison with hit through the right side to help put a run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third.
The nighthawks produced another tally in the fourth as Schiavone drove in a run on a ground out.
Senior Joey Herer connected on a Ground ball to the right side and senior Michael Dean was hit by a pitch as each Nighthawk collected an RBI in the top of the seventh.
In the bottom of the seventh, first-year
Paul DiMascio used a run-producing single for his first collegiate hit and the second Bison score of the afternoon. Rookie
Brett Jackson singled for to help another Bison cross home plate. A wild pitch and a Nighthawk miscue helped produce two more Bison tallies.
Newbury would put up three more runs in the eighth for the 17-5 advantage.
Nichols inched closer in the bottom of the ninth as junior
Kyle Russell delivered a two runs on a sacrifice fly to center field.
Senior Jorge Pimentel earned the win (2-1) after surrendering one run on three hits while striking out three in six innings of work. Sophomore Alec Thibodeau fanned one in 1.2 innings as rookie Daniel Lumb and sophomore Philip Cocce also saw time on the bump for the visitors.
First-year
Brett Franciosi tossed a scoreless ninth inning as junior
Ray Curto picked up the decision for the Bison as senior
Nick Fowler went six innings in relief.
DiMascio and Jackson finished with a pair of hits to go along with one RBI, two runs scored as DiMascio also stole three bases. Burke also recorded a pair of hits for the home team.
Dwyer, Clawson and freshman Cameron D'Agostino each collected three hits while Curry, Cheleat, Dean, rookie Steven Broy and freshman Corey Keane all had a pair.
The Bison welcomes Eastern Nazarene on Saturday for a 12:00 p.m. CCC twinbill that will feature “Senior Day” and the “Play For A Cure” game. Newbury hosts Becker on Saturday for a NECC doubleheader at 11:00 a.m.
