Box Score 2 WENHAM, Mass. (April 16) -- In a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) doubleheader between Gordon and visiting Nichols College today, the Bison proved too much for the Fighting Scots in the matchup, taking game one, 6-1, before rallying in the seventh to secure a 10-6 nightcap win and improve to 12-16 overall and an even 7-7 in conference. With the losses the Scots drop to 3-11 in league play on the season.
After breaking a five-game skid with a win over Curry on Saturday, the Bison looked to keep their momentum going in today's contest as
Chelsea Correia ripped a two-run shot over left in the top of the first to give Nichols the early 2-0 lead. That lead was extended by two more when
Avery Orszulak doubled to lead off the third and was brought in on an RBI triple from
Savannah Thibault on the next at-bat. Thibault then scored on a
Lauren Correia single to leave the Scots down 4-0 after three.
The Scots were able to earn one run back when Rachel Otto singled late in the fourth inning to score Emily Borden from third to make it a three-run ballgame. That was as close as they would get, however, as Nichols added a pair of security runs in the top of the fifth on a passed ball and an
Amanda Broughton RBI to leave the Scots on the losing end of the 6-1 final.
Molly Ferraro earned the win on the mound for the Bison, allowing just six hits and one run with five strikeouts in a full game's work. Borden is credited with the loss for Gordon.
Though Nichols struck first once again in the nightcap as Broughton RBI singled in the top of the opening frame, this time the Scots responded immediately when Kendall Bukuras drilled an RBI double to score Liz Cheesman from third for the equalizer. Not to be outdone, however, Nichols answered back with two runs in the top of the second, another two in the third, and single tallies in the fourth and fifth, all the while keeping Gordon silent at the plate to establish a 7-1 lead.
Down but not out, the Scots came storming back offensively in the bottom of the fifth when Gabriel Roberts popped an RBI single to shallow right to score Cheesman from third and Otto and Kerry posted a two-RBI single and one-RBI single, respectively, for the Scots' fourth run of the frame. Before inning's end, Rachel Ryder would single to plate McPartlan from third to bring the Scots within one, 7-6, heading down the stretch.
But after a quiet sixth on both ends, Nichols put the game away for good when Thibault crushed a three-run homer to center to lift the Bison to the eventual 10-6 win.
Thibault paced the victory for Nichols going 4-5 with four RBI, while
Kylie Langton went 1-3 with three-RBI and
Chelsea Correia and Broughton plated one apiece. Ferraro evened her season's record at 9-9 overall, pitching a full seven innings in the game two win.
The Scots have a day off before hosting non-conference Fisher on Wednesday, April 18 at 3:00 p.m. The Bison also return to action on Wednesday as they travel to take on WPI in a non-conference twinbill beginning at 3:00 p.m.
