Softball Splits CCC Twinbill With Curry

Waszczuk key in helping two runs score

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DUDLEY, Mass. (Apr. 14) – Sophomore pitcher Jennifer Lundstrom tossed a perfect game as Curry defeated host Nichols 4-0 in game one before senior Chelsea Correia collected a pair of extra base hits to lead the Bison past the Colonels 3-2 in the nightcap on Saturday in Commonwealth Coast Conference softball action. With the split, Nichols moves to 10-16 on the season and 4-7 in league play while Curry sports a 17-12 record overall and 6-6 in CCC contests.

Lundstrom was brilliant as she struck out nine batters en route to the perfect game including a 1-2-3 second inning where she set down all three Bison swinging.

The Colonels put up a run in the first on a miscue in the outfield before sending a trio of runners across in the fourth inning. Sophomore Megan Flaherty smacked a 2-RBI triple to right. Flaherty then came home following by a Bison miscue as junior Amanda Felzmann put the ball in play.

Nichols would put the first run on the board in the second game on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of sophomore Rebecca Waszczuk during the bottom of the second inning.

Curry later took the lead in the top of the fourth on a 2-RBI single by junior Valarie LaSala.

Correia lead off the bottom of the fourth with a home run that bounced off the top of the fence protector in left field to even the game at 2-2. The Bison scored the final go-ahead tally of the day on a run-producing single by Waszczuk.

The visitors threatened with two outs in the top of the sixth. Sophomore Taryn Vigeant doubled and junior Mikaela Carney reached on a fielder's choice to put runners on first and third before a double steal attempt was thwarted at home to end the inning.

Rookie Taylor Ahern set down four Bison via the strikeout as she was tagged with the loss.

Senior Molly Ferraro tossed all 14 innings for Nichols as she absorbed the defeat in the first game and picked up the win in the second contest while collecting five strikeouts on the day.

Vigeant led all batters with four hits including a double. Flaherty finished with three hits – one triple - as LaSala and freshman Ariel LaRosa each chipped in with a pair of hits.

The game was part of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee's “Play For A Cure” initiative. Each season a week is designated for raising awareness for a particular disease. Facts about leukemia were read aloud to the crowd in attendance as the team sported special shirts during warm-ups.

Nichols ventures to Gordon on Monday for a CCC twinbill set to begin at 3:00 p.m. while Curry hosts Endicott tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. in a CCC doubleheader.
