Hawks Sweep Softball in CCC Doubleheader

Waszczuk stellar in game two relief appearance

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 DUDLEY, Mass. (Apr. 1) – The Roger Williams University softball team swept host Nichols in a pair of Commonwealth Coast Conference games Sunday afternoon. The Hawks used a four-hitter from senior pitcher Jaclyn Doolin to win the opener, 3-1, and then pounded out 14 hits in a 10-3 nightcap victory. Roger Williams improves to 9-12 overall and 6-2 in league games, while Nichols dips to 5-11 overall and 0-6 in conference action.

Doolin fanned eight and allowed one run in the opener, allowing three of four Bison hits in the sixth inning. The Hawks used a two-out solo homerun from Kara Lewis in the top of the first to take the lead, and added another in the next frame with a two-out RBI double from Caroline Atkinson.

The Bison sent the Hawks down in order in the fourth and fifth before Roger Williams loaded the bases in the fifth with two outs. Nichols pitcher Molly Ferraro easily handled a grounder to first to end the threat.

In the sixth, however, Natasha Stone led off with a double and scored on a Lauren Tierney ground-rule double that rolled under the left field fence. With runners on the corners and one out, Ferraro fanned the final two batters, sending Nichols to the plate.

Savannah Thibault led off with a single and advanced on a Lauren Correia bunt before coming around to score on an Emalee Watkins single. Doolin ended the inning with a strikeout, her seventh of the game.

Ferraro scattered six hits and struck out seven while walking four in the game.

Erica Castro led off game two with a solo home run, and Tierney plated Kaitlyn Costa, who drew a walk, with a two-run shot just three batters later to give the Hawks a 3-0 lead after their first go-round.

Nichols got one back in the bottom of the frame after Lauren Correia singled, advanced on a Thibault sacrifice and then on a wild pitch before crossing the plate on a Watkins groundout.

Castro hit a one-out double in the second inning and scored on a Costa single to make it 4-1 in favor of Roger Williams, but Nichols again answered back in the bottom half of the inning. Caitlyn O'Loughlin legged out a triple and Kylie Langton drew a walk to set up a two-run double from Avery Orszulak after a lengthy at-bat in the nine spot.

Leading, 4-3, headed to the fourth, the Hawks broke open the game with four runs on six hits. Julia Giancola led off with a single and after Nichols pitcher Taylor Ferrazzi fanned a batter, the Hawks had four-straight hits, including a two-run double from Rachel Erlich. A popup to Ferrazzi left runners on the corners, but an RBI single from Alana Peoples  sent the fourth run across.

Giancola and Mary Petrone led off the fifth with a double and single respectively and with Giancola on third, executed a double steal to put the Hawks ahead, 9-3. Laura McConnell drew a bases-loaded walk which sent out Ferrazzi. Reliever Rebecca Waszczuk came in with the bases loaded and no outs, where she induced two infield blips for easy outs at home and a flyout to second base to strand all the runners. Waszczuk surrendered only two hits and struck out one in the final three innings.

The Bison threatened in the bottom of the seventh after Orszulak reached on a dropped popup by the third baseman with one out and Lauren Correia moved her over with a single. An infield fly put up the second out before Watkins singled to load the bases, but the final batter flew out to deep left field.

Hawks hurler Lewis earned the win scattering seven hits and fanning one. Ferrazzi shouldered the loss with 14 hits, five walks and a pair of strikeouts.

Nichols is back in action on Monday when they travel to Wentworth for a makeup CCC doubleheader at 4 p.m. Roger Williams hosts Salve Regina on Wednesday in a 4 p.m. CCC twinbill.
