Box Score 2 CAPE CORAL, Fla. (Mar. 13) – Led by two complete-game efforts from senior pitcher
Molly Ferraro, the Nichols College softball team won a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic on Tuesday. The Bison used a walkoff double from
Chelsea Correia to edge Elms, 1-0, in the bottom of the ninth in the day's first game, and went ahead early on Lasell in a 3-2 win in the second game. Nichols evens its record at 4-4 on the year.
Ferraro fanned 10 in the game, allowing her first hit in the fifth inning. With no score, Elms threatened in the eighth, but a play at the plate kept the go-ahead run from scoring and Ferraro fanned the next batter before
Savannah Thibault made a leaping catch to end the inning.
Nichols went 1-2-3 in the bottom of the eighth before Ferraro fanned the final batter. She finished the game allowing six hits.
With
Rachel Dalrymple on second to start the inning, Nichols was an out behind after a foul out before
Chelsea Correia delivered the game-winning hit.
Avery Orszulak gave Nichols a 1-0 lead in the second with an RBI double. Elms used some small ball and speedy baserunning to score two in the top of the third. Dalrymple led off the bottom of the inning with a double and came around to score on a Caitlyn O'Loughlin Waterford single. O'Loughlin advanced on a wild pitch and scored the winning run on a sacrifice fly by
Emalee Watkins.
Ferraro walked one in while striking out three among four hits in the complete-game effort.
Nichols has canceled its remaining two games in Florida due to a flight rescheduling issue resulting from Direct Air canceling flights. The Bison resume play at home on Saturday, March 24 against Salve Regina in its Commonwealth Coast Conference opening doubleheader.
