Box Score 2 CAPE CORAL, Fla. (Mar. 11) –The Nichols College softball team suffered a pair of setbacks at the Gene Cusic Classic Sunday, falling late to the College of Wooster, 2-0, and falling behind early to Brockport in a 6-2 loss.
Nichols struggled to get on base in the day's opening game, managing four hits in the matchup. First year
Avery Orszulak finished the game 2-for-2 with a walk. Bison pitcher
Molly Ferraro scattered seven hits from the fourth inning on while fanning four.
Lauren Swinehart gave the Scots the lead in the top of the sixth with a leadoff home run over the left field fence. Wooster added a run in the seventh with a bases-loaded, two-out single from pitcher Gina Pirolozzi. Bison centerfielder
Lauren Correia prevented a third run from crossing with a laser throw to home where
Chelsea Correia tagged out the runner coming from second. Pirolozzi struck out 13 while scattering four hits in the win.
In the second game, Nichols got single runs in the second and third inning, both courtesy of
Savannah Thibault.
Chelsea Correia led off the second with a double, advanced on a wild pitch and came across on a Thibault single. Thibault drew a two-out, bases-loaded walk in the third to plate
Lauren Correia, but Brockport hurler Erin Fleming struck out the final batter to strand three Bison on the bases.
First year pitcher
Taylor Ferrazzi went the distance for the Bison, surrendering six runs (one earned) on 10 hits while walking two.
Brockport scored two runs in the first inning on three hits, an error and a sac fly, and added three in the third with two outs, including a pair on a Susanna Johnson single that she tried to extend to two, only to be thwarted by a throw from center. Johnson, who finished the game 3-for-3 with three RBI, also had an RBI single in the fifth.
