Box Score NEWPORT, R.I. (Feb. 14) – The Nichols College men's basketball team fell to Salve Regina, 85-72, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference game at Rodgers Recreation Center Tuesday evening. The Bison dip to 11-13 overall and 9-8 in conference action. Salve Regina improves to 16-8 overall and 14-3 in league play.
Ryan Sheehan led Nichols with a game-high 21 points and six rebounds, while
Matt Langadas added 11 and six boards. Mike Salis joined the pair in double digits with 10 points and chipped in with six rebounds and a game-high four steals.
Isiah Pringle led Salve Regina with 18 points while William Smiley chipped in with 17 points and eight rebounds. Jeff Bielefeld added a double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds, while Ryan Birrell scored 15 points.
The Bison jumped out to a six-point lead within the opening three minutes, and the Seahawks kept it close over the next seven as the teams traded the leads six times before a jumper from Bielefeld sparked Salve Regina to hold the lead for the remainder of the game. The Seahawks expanded their lead to as many as 10 with four minutes left before Nichols got hot in the paint, scoring six-straight points to cut the deficit back to four, 41-37, but Salve took advantage of some timely Bison turnovers to carry a 48-40 lead into the locker room.
Nichols stormed out of the gate in the second half, but Salve Regina held onto a double-digit lead and expanded it to 15 on a Brendan Canova jumper just past the midpoint. Nichols got within 11 as the teams traded baskets at a furious pace under the four-minute mark, but that was as close as the Bison would get.
Salve Regina took advantage of 19 Nichols turnovers in the game to score 24 points, but during the second half, it was the Bison who rallied to parlay 14 Salve Regina errors into 17 points. The Seahawks held a 46-37 advantage in rebounding and led points in the paint at a 46-38 margin.
Nichols hosts Gordon on Saturday a 2 p.m. for Senior Day. The Bison will honor Salis,
Nick Brown and
Dominique Jean-Pierre prior to the regular-season finale.
