BURRILLVILLE, R.I. – Freshman Cassandra Sherman (North Smithfield, R.I.) tallied her first two collegiate goals and game-winner as Southern Maine topped Nichols 5-1 in an ECAC Women's East matchup on Friday night at Levy Rink.
Southern Maine (2-2-2, 2-1-2 ECACE) and Sophomore Julia Pearl (Essex Junction, Vt.) opened the scoring with a tally at 5:11 into the contest. Senior Kailey Bubier (Auburn, Maine) helped setup the chance as Pearl threaded a scrum for her first of the game and the season. The Huskies carried an 8-3 bulge in shots and went 0-for-3 on the power play.
After the intermission, Bison (2-6-0, 0-5-0 ECACE) junior
Megan Gerein (Dubuque, Iowa) capitalized on a breakaway at 6:27 to even the game at 1-all. Just under a minute later, the visitors regained the lead as Sherman took a wrist shot from the top of the circle that crossed the goal line for her first collegiate goal. Junior Erin Banfield (Montpelier, Vt.) and sophomore Maggie Lane (Burlington, Mass.) recorded helpers on the play. Nichols finished the frame with an 11-10 lead in shots while both squads went 0-for-2 with extra personnel.
The Huskies extended their lead as Banfield found the top corner of the net on the blocker side off a feed from sophomore Katelyn Ladd (Billerica, Mass.) at 15:58 in the third for the shorthanded goal. With 50.5 showing on the scoreboard sophomore Talya Bent (Cranston, R.I.) topped off the offense with a shot to top left corner from the right circle with help from senior Alex Smith (Winthrop, Mass.) and junior Brittany Soar (Boxborough, Mass.). The visitors took 15 of the 24 shots in the frame as each side had one power play chance.
Sophomore Liz Bergstrom (Chanhassen, Minn.) stopped 22 shots as she improved to 2-1-2 in the victory for the Huskies. First-year
Nia Kelly (Cary, N.C.) slipped to 2-5-0 as she made a game-high 28 saves.
Both teams return to the ice tomorrow. Nichols entertains Plymouth State at 7:40 while Southern Maine continues on to Manhattanville for an 11:30 a.m. game.
