Box Score 2 MILTON, Mass. (Mar. 27) – The Nichols College softball team opened The Commonwealth Coast Conference play with a doubleheader sweep at Curry Sunday afternoon, dealing the Colonels losses of 13-3 and 13-8. The Bison improve to 6-7 overall and 2-0 in TCCC action after posting their largest single-game offensive output since the 2008 season, hammering out a combined 30 hits on the day.
Junior pitcher
Molly Ferraro (Millis, Mass.) earned the win in both games for the Bison, allowing three runs on nine hits in a complete-game effort in the opener before hurling 4.2 innings of two-hit ball in relief to improve to 5-1 in the nightcap.
Junior third baseman
Savannah Thibault (Marlborough, Mass.) led Nichols with five hits on the day, going 3-for-5 with three RBI and a double in the opener. Junior Senior first baseman
Lindsay Hassett (Oxford, Mass.) drove in six runs on the day, with three RBI in each game, including a three-run double in the day's first game.
Nichols received hits from every spot in the lineup in the first game, and after Curry tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the second, Nichols batted around in the third, scoring five runs on five hits, including back-to-back doubles from
Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) and Thibault. The Bison extended their lead to seven runs in the fifth inning with two runs on four hits before Curry got one back in the bottom of the frame on four consecutive singles. After Thibault drove one run in with a bases-loaded single in the top of the seventh, Hassett delivered a three-run double to cap the scoring.
The Bison opened the second game with three runs in the first and second innings, scoring two on first year shortstop
Emalee Watkins' (Malden, Mass.) double in the opening inning, and three on a two-out, three-run home run from
Chelsea Correia in the second. But Curry batted around in the bottom of the second, taking advantage of an early error and a hit batter to score four unearned runs on five hits. The Colonels added two more in the third to tie it up before Ferraro came in to retire the final two batters.
Allasyn Lieneck (Oldsmar, Fla.) hit a two-run double among a four-run fourth inning, and the Bison got sacrifice flies from Hassett and
Mary Kate Frodema (Springfield, Mass.) amidst a three-run fifth to break open the game. Curry got two runs back in the seventh on a two-run homer by Taryn Vigeant.
Nichols is back in action Thursday when the Bison host Wentworth at 3:00 for a TCCC doubleheader.
