Box Score 2 CAPE CORAL, Fla. (Mar. 16) – The Nichols College softball team wrapped up its spring trip to Florida Wednesday by splitting its games, defeating the College of Wooster, 2-0, in the day's first game before falling to SUNY Brockport, 2-0, at the Gene Cusic Classic. The Bison return to New England with a 4-6 record and will travel to Westfield State on Wednesday, March 23 for a 3:30 p.m. non-conference doubleheader.
In the first game, Nichols got its runs in a three-hit third inning, capped by a two-run single from senior
Lindsay Hassett (Oxford, Mass.). That was it for the Bison offense, however, as
Barbara Roy (Springfield, Mass.) managed the only hit the rest of the way, knocking a single in the sixth. Nichols got out of a bases loaded jam in the second and surrendered the lone run in the sixth on a two-out wild pitch.
Emalee Watkins (Malden, Mass.) made a highlight reel diving stop in the infield in the frame and pitcher
Molly Ferraro (Millis, Mass.) induced a fly out to center to end the inning stranding a runner on second to keep the lead.
Nichols stranded runners on second base in the first, fifth and sixth innings, collecting four hits against SUNY Brockport in the second game, falling victim to nine strikeouts. The Eagles did the most damage from the three, four and five spots in their lineup, collecting six of their seven hits, both runs and an RBI from those spots. A Bison error proved costly in the first inning with two on, as Brockport sent one across, but the Bison stranded two to end the inning with a groundout. Three-straight hits opened the Brockport third to edge the Eagles ahead, 2-0, but Bison pitcher
Kara Buckley (Nashua, N.H.) only surrendered one more hit after then to keep them off the board.
