(Mar. 14) – The Nichols College softball team earned a split at the Gene Cusic Classic Monday defeating Lasell in the first game of the day, 5-0, before falling to Washington College by a score of 4-1. The Bison continue action Tuesday with games against Stevens Institute of Technology (9 a.m.) and North Park University (11 a.m.) at the Lee County Complex in Fort Myers.

Backed by a seven-strikeout shutout by junior pitcher Molly Ferraro (Millis, Mass.), the Bison posted their first shutout of the season against the Lasers. First year outfielder Allasyn Lieneck (Oldsmar, Fla.) went 3-for-3 with two runs scored and a stolen base, while classmate Rebecca Palmarozza (Hamden, Conn.) finished 3-for-4 with an RBI as the designated player. Nichols led, 2-0, after two and took advantage of three errors and cranked out three hits in the fifth to cap the scoring.

Junior catcher Chelsea Correia's (Seekonk, Mass.) solo home run in the fifth inning accounted for the Bison's lone run in the second game. Washington College put four runs on the board in the fourth on five hits and an error before Nichols got on board when Chelsea Correia led off the next frame with her fifth career homer. She led the Bison with a 2-for-3 game at the plate. Senior Kara Buckley (Nashua, N.H.) took the loss with four innings of work before giving way to Lindsay Hassett (Oxford, Mass.), who fanned three while allowing one hit over the final two innings.
