Box Score 2 CAPE CORAL, Fla. (Mar. 13) – The Nichols College softball team dropped a pair of games at the Gene Cusic Classic in Florida Sunday. The Bison were edged by MCLA, 1-0, in the first game of the day, and in the second game, could not finish a comeback against St. Mary's (Ind.) in a 12-6 loss. Nichols plays two afternoon games Monday against Lasell and Washington College at the Cape Coral Complex Field 3.
MCLA scored the leadoff batter in the third inning and held the Bison to two hits in the game. Nichols looked to get on the board in the seventh by sac bunting pinch runner
Shannon Weeks (Greenfield, Mass.) to second with one out, but a groundout to third ended the inning. Junior pitcher
Molly Ferraro (Millis, Mass.) worked out of a bases loaded jam in the second inning with the first of five strikeouts in the game, finishing the morning allowing seven hits and walking one.
St. Mary's held on to the lead from the beginning of the day's second game after scoring six runs in the first inning on six hits. Nichols got two runs back in the second on back-to-back RBI doubles from
Rebecca Palmarozza (Hamden, Conn.) and
Allasyn Lieneck (Oldsmar, Fla.), but the Belles extended their lead to 10-2 by the bottom of the third. Senior pitcher
Kara Buckley (Nashua, N.H.) came in to relieve
Lindsay Hassett (Oxford, Mass.) and limited St. Mary's to three hits and two runs the rest of the way, while the Bison tacked on four runs, including three on a bases-loaded double by
Emalee Watkins (Malden, Mass.) in the fifth inning.
