Softball Splits Doubleheader at Regis

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WESTON, Mass.(April 11) — Nichols College (8-18, 5-9 TCCC) split a doubleheader with Regis College (5-22, 2-8 TCCC) Sunday afternoon, defeating Regis 8-1 in game one, and falling to the Pride 5-2 in the second game.

A balanced opener for both teams changed drastically after Regis' Maryssa Allen scored the game's first run of the day in the third inning. Allen was 1-for-5 on the day at the plate, and pitched five innings in game two to earn the win.

Neither team had an upper hand on either side of the ball until Nichols' Ashley Robidoux (Milford, Mass.) singled to begin a seven-run sixth inning for the Bison. Nichols followed with three-straight singles from Valeri Calcagni (Rocky Hill, Conn.), Kylie Langton (Medford, Mass.) and Samantha Hardigan (Brockton, Mass.) before the next four batters reached on two hits and two errors. Sacrifice flies from Shannon Weeks (Greenfield, Mass.) and Robidoux in her second at-bat of the inning sent the sixth and seventh runs across before a lineout to the pitcher ended the frame.

Hardigan led off the seventh with a first-pitch triple and came across the plate on a Lauren Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) single for the Bison's eighth run.

Regis' Caitlin Luquet's RBI single to centerfield plated Allen in the third. She finished 2-for-3 at the plate in the game.

Kara Buckley (Nashua, N.H.) earned the complete-game win for the Bison, fanning four, walking one while allowing seven hits.

With her first at bat in game two, Hope Benjamin took the third pitch thrown to her deep over the left-centerfield fence for Regis' first score, and day's only homerun.

Benjamin finished her day 2-for-2, hitting two RBI's, and scoring two runs. Teammate Shannon Hurley also lifted the Pride, hitting 2-for-2, and also tallying two RBI against Nichols pitcher Molly Ferraro (Millis, Mass.) in game two.

Ferraro pitched three innings, allowing four runs, and walking two batters. She struck out three Regis batters before ending her day at the mound. Regis' Allen faced 22 Nichols batters, allowing three hits and two runs.

Luquet returned in game two to score two runs for Regis. Regis' Abram would mark a hit and a run.

Nichols faces TCCC opponent Gordon College April 13. Regis will travel to New England College on the same day.
