Box Score 2 DUDLEY, Mass. (March 28) – Sophomore catcher Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) hit a walkoff two-run home run in the second game of a doubleheader to help the Nichols College softball team complete a The Commonwealth Coast Conference sweep of Anna Maria College Sunday afternoon with a 7-5 victory. Nichols won the opening game, 4-1, and improves to 6-10 overall and 4-2 in TCCC action, while the AMCATS drop to 6-14 and 2-4 in conference play.
Nichols held a 5-1 lead through six innings, but the AMCATS tied up the game in the top of the seventh thanks to a two-run double from Allyssa Boynkin and a fielding error.
The AMCATS scored the first batter of the game on an RBI double from Mary Moroski, but it was all Bison after that, as Nichols doubled up its visitors in the bottom half of the inning and then put up single runs in the third, fifth and sixth innings.
Loren Rozanski (Plainville, Conn.) led Nichols with a 3-for-4 outing and three RBI, plating two in the bottom of the first inning with a single. Shayna Ramalho (Monroe, Conn.) plated a run in the third before Rozanski sent another across in the fifth on a double, and a Samantha Hardigan (Brockton, Mass.) single allowed Kylie Langton (Medford, Mass.) to score in the sixth.
Nichols sophomore Molly Ferraro (Millis, Mass.) fanned six and allowed six hits to earn the win, while Holly Renna took the loss with 11 hits and five strikeouts in five innings. She was briefly replaced by Michelle Blackler, who allowed one run on two hits in the sixth inning.
In the first game, Nichols took advantage of a pair of fielding errors to score three runs in the second inning. With the bases loaded, a sac fly from Valeri Calcagni (Rocky Hill, Conn.) sent the first run across, and Lauren Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) followed with an RBI single. Shannon Weeks (Greenfield, Mass.) bunted the next run across before a groundout ended the inning.
The AMCATS got one back in the top of the third on a solo home run from Tabitha Ruggeri, but Nichols pitcher Kara Buckley (Nashua, N.H.) held them in check with two hits over the remainder of the game.
Lauren Correia plated one more in the sixth for the Bison with a single; she finished 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI.
Buckley earned the win with two strikeouts and seven hits allowed, while Renna took the loss with five strikeouts and five hits.
Nichols returns to action on Tuesday, March 30th when the Bison host a TCCC doubleheader against Salve Regina at 3:30 p.m. Anna Maria travels to Endicott Tuesday for a 3 p.m. conference twinbill.
