Salve Regina Edges Women's Hockey in OT, 2-1

Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. (Nov. 19) – Sophomore Melanie Sherlock scored her second goal of the season 2:14 into overtime to lift the Salve Regina University women's ice hockey team to a 2-1 win over Nichols College in Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference (ECAC) Women's East action Friday night at St. George's Rink.

Senior Molly Golden also scored for the Seahawks, who won their second-straight game and improved to 2-3-0 (2-2-0 ECAC) on the season. Freshman Bridget Griffin (Wilmington, Mass.) potted her first career goal for the Bison, who slipped to 1-4-0 (0-4-0 ECAC).

In the extra session, Salve Regina sophomore Rachel Porter controlled the puck behind the net before having it knocked off her stick by sophomore defenseman Mary Fehr (Leamington, Ontario). The loose puck found its way onto the stick of Sherlock, who collected it and fired a shot from the circle that beat Nichols goalkeeper Francesca Palazzo (Bernardston, Mass.) glove side.

The two teams began the game playing 40 minutes of scoreless hockey, thanks in large part to Palazzo, who chalked up 27 saves through the first two periods. Golden broke a scoreless tie 2:08 into the third period when she redirected a shot from the right point by junior Jen Thiesing past Palazzo. The Bison evened the score at one with a power-play goal by Griffin at 14:52 of the period. Sophomore Emily Larosa (Weymouth, Mass.) slid a pass to Griffin at the right side of the net, and her shot squeezed through Muehlbronner.

The Seahawks outshot the Bison 38-14, including 18-6 in the second period. The Seahawks went 0-for-2 with the extra skater while Nichols was 1-for-2. Palazzo finished the night with 36 saves and now holds a .937 save percentage on the season. Muehlbronner stopped 13 shots to earn her first win of the season.

Salve Regina returns to action on Saturday when they host Manhattanville at 3 p.m. The Bison travel to Worcester, Mass. to play Holy Cross at 1 p.m.
