Hewitt Tabbed Head Men's Lacrosse Coach

DUDLEY, Mass. – Nichols College Athletics Director Charlyn Robert has announced the hiring of Brett Hewitt as head men's lacrosse coach. Hewitt becomes the 12th head coach in program history after serving as an assistant coach at Bentley University for the past five seasons.

“I'm very excited to have this opportunity at Nichols College,” said Hewitt. “With the College's focus on developing leaders both on and off the field, we have a great opportunity to use the College's values to build a program that continually strives for excellence. I'm looking forward to rebuilding a winning tradition within the Bison lacrosse program.”

Hewitt helped guide the Falcons into the Northeast-10 playoffs in four of his five seasons behind the bench and led Bentley to the eighth spot in the final USILA DII poll of the 2009 season. He brings an extensive background in game analysis to his first collegiate head coaching position after serving as the Falcons' defensive coordinator the last four seasons. In his first season as head of Bentley's defense in 2005, the Falcons ranked second in goals against average and had the top-ranked man-down defense in the nation. In 2006, the Falcons led the Northeast-10 in caused turnovers.

“I am very pleased to have Coach Hewitt join our staff as head men's lacrosse coach,” said Robert. “The success to which he has contributed and brought to the Bentley program is commendable. Our team was very close and had great chemistry last year, and with only two graduates and three juniors, Brett will have a core of the team returning along with an incoming class of about 23 freshmen to begin his career as a head coach. He is eager to get started and we are looking forward to a very successful and exciting spring season.”

Throughout his coaching career, Hewitt has demonstrated experience in recruiting, scouting, season and practice planning as well as strength and conditioning. He has been designing and delivering fitness programs for lacrosse players for the past 10 years, focusing on functional training to maximize transferability of strength to the playing field.

Before returning to his alma mater, Hewitt was the head boys lacrosse coach and an assistant football coach at Cathedral High School in Springfield from 2003-04 and also coached the Patriot Lacrosse All-Star Team, a Western Massachusetts team that played in college recruiting showcases. In the summer of 2004, he served as director of lacrosse at Camp Mah-Kee-Nac in Lenox.

A native of Wilbraham, Hewitt was a four-year member of the Falcons' lacrosse team under head coach Jim Murphy, serving as captain in his junior and senior campaigns. He graduated from Bentley with a bachelor's of science degree in accountancy in 2002 and is currently pursuing an MBA from Bentley.

Hewitt and his wife, Ashley, currently reside in Cumberland, R.I.
