Softball Splits on Day Two at Rebel Spring Games

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

KISSIMMEE, Fla. – The Nichols College softball team split its games on day two of the Rebel Spring Games Monday, defeating Springfield College, 4-3, before falling to Washington & Jefferson, 7-1, in the nightcap. Sophomore pitcher Lindsay Hassett (Oxford, Mass.) threw a complete game in the win over the Pride, and then went 1-for-2 at the plate in the second game as the designated player.

Nichols collected two runs in the top of the first, but the Pride answered with two in the bottom half of the inning. The Bison went up, 3-2, in the fifth, but again Springfield answered in the bottom half to knot the game. It was in the seventh inning that Nichols notched the winning run, and then held off Springfield after the leadoff batter singled before advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt. Hassett went the distance for the Bison, striking out four while allowing six hits in her first complete game of the season. Savannah Thibault (Marlboro, Mass.) went 2-for-3 with a triple while Lauren Correia (Seekonk, Mass.) went 3-for-4. In the designated player position, Samantha Hardigan (Brockton, Mass.) was 1-for-2 with an RBI.

The Bison surrendered three runs in the first inning to the Presidents before getting one back in the second, courtesy of an RBI double from Chelsea Correia (Seekonk, Mass.). Washington & Jefferson collected another run in the third and added two more in the sixth before a solo home run in the seventh capped the scoring. Sophomore Kara Buckley (Nashua, N.H.) pitched 5.1 innings, allowing three earned runs before giving way to junior Ashley Wyland (Schenectady, N.Y.), who finished out the game.

Nichols (1-3) continues play at the Rebel Spring games Tuesday, March 17, facing Rowan at 9 am and then Spring Arbor at 1 p.m.
