Women's Hockey Edged at Sacred Heart, 3-1

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (Dec. 2) – The Sacred Heart University women's ice hockey team was back in action at home Wednesday night.  The Pioneers faced off against Nichols College in the first of three home games in the next five days. SHU pulled out a 3-1 victory to improve to 2-9 on the season, while the Bison dropped to 1-5.

Junior Lauren Fontaine netted her sixth goal of the season to put the Pioneers on top in the first period.  Sophomore defender Jennifer Burroughs collected an assist on the score.

In the second period junior Taryn Lapierre scored off of an assist from classmate Brittany Hartman (Prior Lake, MN).  Classmate Kristina Hankins added a third goal for the Pioneers as she stole the puck at the blue line skated in and put the puck off the crossbar and into the net.

Freshman defender Mary Fehr (Leamington, Ontario) found the back of the net with less than three minutes remaining in the third period to avoid the shutout. She was assisted by Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) and Hannah Tardif (Laconia, N.H.).

In between the pipes for SHU, freshman Emily Siira stopped 17 shots to earn the win. Senior Melissa Mansfield (Ronkonkoma, N.Y.) made 37 saves for the Bison.

Nichols travels to Castleton State for a 7 p.m. ECAC East game on Friday.
