Box Score MIDDLETOWN, R.I. – Sophomore Molly Golden scored twice and classmate Gabrielle Gardner dished out three assist to lead Salve Regina University past Nichols College 6-3 in ECAC women's hockey action Friday night at St. George's Rink.
Sophomores Drew Chernisky and Sarah Small each recorded a goal and an assist for the Seahawks, who extended their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) and improved to 10-4-1 (7-4-0 ECAC) with the win. Freshman Krista-Jean Forand (Plymouth, Mass.) scored twice for the Bison (1-12-1, 0-8-1 ECAC).
The Seahawks opened up a 2-0 lead in the first period, outshooting the Bison 19-4. Freshman opened the scoring at 3:18 of the stanza, ripping a wrist shot over freshman goalie Christine Mazza's (Dedham, Mass.) glove hand. Salve Regina doubled its lead at 14:15 when classmate Shannon Ellis scored her third goal of the season off a shot from the left point by Small.
Following sophomore Danika Williams' second goal of the season just 1:04 into the second period, the Bison regrouped and scored a pair of goals to make it 3-2 after 40 minutes of play. Freshman Haylie Carter (Forney,Texas) collected her first collegiate goal at 14:53, backhanding a shot past Seahawk sophomore goalie Lauren Barella. Just 2:12 later, Forand chipped a loose puck past Barella for her second goal of the season at 17:05.
In the third, Salve Regina quickly regained its three-goal lead at 5-2 behind goals from sophomore Alex Reiwer at 2:15 and a power-play tally by Golden at 4:09. Forand's second goal of the game on a wrist shot from the slot at 17:40 brought the Bison to within two goals at 5-3 before Golden's second marker of the night with 43 seconds remaining in regulation sealed the win.
Barella made 19 saves to improve to 5-0-0 on the season while Mazza stopped 46 Seahawk shots, including 17 in the opening period. The Seahawks were 1-for-6 with the man advantage and kept the Bison scoreless in four power play opportunities.
Nichols returns to action on Friday, January 23, when the Bison host UMass Boston at 5:30 p.m.
