Holy Cross Downs Women's Hockey, 6-0

WORCESTER, Mass.    Freshman forward Stacey Hochkins scored three goals as the Holy Cross women's ice hockey team shut out Nichols, 6-0, in ECAC East action Saturday afternoon at the Hart Center. With the win, Holy Cross improves to 12-0-1 (8-0-1 ECAC) and remains unbeaten, while Nichols falls to 1-10-0 (0-7-0 ECAC).

 

The Crusaders scored first when Hochkins took a pass from sophomore forward Jocelyn Kratchmer and scored from in the slot at the 4:16 mark. Holy Cross took the 2-0 lead at the 16:01 mark when sophomore defenseman Colleen Krmpotich scored her third goal of the season off an assist from freshman defenseman Brooke Miller and freshman forward Nicola Garat. Garat scored a last second goal, at 19:36, to give the Crusaders the 3-0 lead heading into the locker room.

 

Holy Cross didn't waste any time, scoring its fourth goal just 19 seconds into the second period. Hochkins took a pass from Kratchmer and junior defenseman Lisa Wilson at the top of the crease to score her second goal of the game. The Crusaders added a fifth goal at the 15:38 mark when junior forward Kathryn Kelley put the puck into the right corner of the net off an assist from junior defenseman Katelyn Doherty.

 

The Crusaders added one more goal in the third period when Hochkins scored her third goal of the afternoon. Hochkins stole the puck at center ice and scored the breakaway goal at the 16:08 mark to end the game, 6-0.

 

Holy Cross sophomore goalkeeper Lindsay Atkinson made the start in net for the Crusaders, earning her first shutout of the season with 14 saves to improve to 4-0. Nichols first-year goaltender Christine Mazza (Dedham, Mass) shouldered the loss with 47 saves, and drops to 0-3-0 on the season. Holy Cross out-shot Nichols 53-14 and went 1-5 on the man-advantage, while Nichols went 0-3.

 

Holy Cross continues ECAC East action on the road on Friday, Jan. 23, traveling to UMass-Boston for a 7:00 p.m. face-off. Nichols travels to MIT Tuesday for a 7 p.m. game.
