NEW LONDON, Conn. (9/3/2026) – The Nichols College men's soccer team scored twice in the second half to pull away from Mitchell College, 3-1, in non-conference action Thursday afternoon at Alumni Field. All three Nichols goals came from different scorers, with Knowles, Reilly and Morse each finding the back of the net. Montreuil recorded two assists, while Abroms and O'Meara each added an assist.
The Bison now move to 2-0, while Mitchell drops to 0-2 in the early season.
The Bison struck first in the seventh minute when
Ethan Knowles took a one-time shot from the outside of the box and found the bottom right corner off an assist from
Alexandro Montreuil, giving Nichols an early 1-0 advantage.
Mitchell answered in the 17th minute, as Josh Joiner scored to bring the contest level at 1-1. The score remained tied through halftime despite Nichols holding a majority of possession.
Nichols regained the lead in the 67th minute when
Nick Reilly converted a chance assisted by
Maxwell Abroms and
Zach O'Meara. Just 100 seconds later, the Bison added an insurance goal as
Avery Morse scored off another assist from Montreuil to make it a 3-1 contest. The Bison's defense and goalkeeper
Anthony Grguric took care of the rest, keeping the Mariners out for the remainder of the game.
Grguric made seven saves over 90 minutes, including six in the second half, to preserve the two-goal victory. Grguric's best save of the game came in the 78th minute, when the Mitchell attacker was in on goal with only the keeper to beat, but the Toronto native stood strong, making the kick save.
Nichols finished the afternoon with a 14-12 advantage in shots and earned eight corner kicks compared to Mitchell's one.
The Bison open up their home slate on Saturday, September 5th, when the host Emerson College for the Bison's senior day. The senior day ceremony starts at 10:30 AM at the Nichols soccer field, with the kickoff set for 11 AM.
