Field Hockey Loses Road Test at Western New England

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (9/27/2025) – The Nichols field hockey team was unable to get the offense going in a 5-0 road loss to conference opponent Western New England University on Saturday afternoon at Golden Bear Stadium.

With the loss, the Bison drop to 2-8 (0-3 CNE) overall, while the Golden Bears improve to 7-3 (3-0 CNE).

The two teams came out fighting in the first quarter, but the Golden Bears took advantage of a pair of quick goals just 17 seconds apart, scoring them at the 2:30 and 2:47 marks of the period to jump ahead 2-0. Then, in the second quarter, the hosts would tack on a third goal just over 10 minutes in, with the 3-0 lead holding until halftime.
The Golden Bears peppered the Bison net with nine shots in the third quarter, but failed to register another goal as freshman goalkeeper Jessa Altemose stood tall.

However, Western New England eventually re-discovered their scoring groove, chipping in two more goals in the fourth quarter to round out their 5-0 win, outshooting the Bison by a 35-5 margin throughout along with a 17-5 edge in corners.

In goal, Altemose (2-8) made 17 saves, which registered as a season-high for the first-year keeper.

Field hockey returns to Vendetti Field on for a non-conference game against Wellesley College (1-7, 0-2 NEWMAC), beginning at 7:00 PM.
