SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (4/29/2025) – Behind a 5-6 day from senior
Ben Jerome and 2.1 strong innings from senior
John Steed, the Nichols College Baseball team stunned Western New England on Tuesday afternoon from Trelease Field. Nichols won 9-8 after a four run, ninth inning to steal the win.
Senior
Ben Jerome carried the load for the Bison, going 5-6 on the day with two RBI and three runs scored. Freshman
Ryan Keating went 3-6 with one run scored and junior
Liam Flynn was 2-5 with four RBI in the game as well.
The Bison opened the scoring in the first inning, when Flynn, singled to center field and scored Jerome in the process to take a 1-0 Nichols lead. The Golden Bears leveled the score in the bottom half of the inning, off a ground out.
Nichols regained the lead with a double off the bat of Jerome, who scored senior
Andrew Croteau in the process, making it 2-1 Bison. In the bottom of the fifth inning, Western New England, pulled level again, but the Bison added to their run total in the top of the sixth for a 3-2 lead.
The bottom of the sixth inning, saw the Golden Bears, earn their first lead of the game and extend their led to 6-3 in the seventh inning. With their backs against the walls, the Bison battled back, plating a pair of runs the eighth inning. Nichols trailed 6-5 after the to half of the eighth.
WNE added a run in the bottom half of the inning and led 7-5 headed to the ninth. In the ninth inning. Nichols found themselves in win mode, scoring four runs to seal the win. The Bison took a 9-7 lead into the top of the ninth, and eventually hung on to beat Western New England, 9-8 in CNE play.
Steed (7-1) earned his seventh win of the season, in 2.1 innings of relief. Sophomore
Allen Hinckley threw 5.0 innings, while allowing three runs on four hits and striking out four batters. Teammate
Johnathon Brzezicki and senior
Patrick Doyle also saw time on the mound.
Nichols (22-14, 9-5 CNE) will stay on the road and head to Coast Guard for a non-conference match-up on Wednesday afternoon.
