DUDLEY, Mass. (4/24/2025) – The Nichols College Baseball team used a nine run fifth inning, to garb a lead and didn't look back as they cruised to victory against Clark University on Thursday afternoon from the Nichols Baseball Field in non-conference play.
Junior
Liam Flynn went 4-5 with a run scored in the game. Senior
Karl Miller, freshman
Collin Harty and
Julian Galvan all added multi-hit games. Harty and Galvan also had two RBI each, with Harty also homering.
Senior
Ben Jerome earned his 91
st and 92
nd walk to set the all-time walks record, passing Mark Winship who recorded 90 walks from 1985-88.
The Cougars opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning, after scoring on a wild pitch to take a 1-0 lead. In the third inning, the Cougars continued to add to their lead with an RBI double and then scored their third run on a ground out. Nichols trailed 3-0 after three innings. In the top of the fifth, Clark extended their lead to 5-0 with another double and a sacrifice fly.
The Bison finally responded in the bottom of the fifth inning to grab their first lead of the game. Sophomore
Anthony Hackert reached on a fielding error and then Harty launched a two-run home run to left field to cut into the lead. Nichols then singled and walked, before advancing on a wild pitch, putting runners on second and third. Freshman
Ryan Keating lifted a ball to left field and scored junior
Julian Galvan on a sac-fly.
Senior
Ben Jerome scored on a failed pick off attempt, making it 5-4. Teammate
Andrew Croteau walked to scored Flynn and tie the game at 5-5 in the fifth inning. The Bison were not done there, when Miller scored on a throwing error. Galvan then singled through the right side, scoring two more runs to make it 8-5 Bison. Jerome then doubled down the line to score Hackert, making it 9-5 Bison.
Clark added another run in the top of the seventh inning, with a bases loaded walk, to cut into the Bison lead. In the eighth, the Cougars cut the Bison lead to one, 9-8 with another double to center field.
Nichol put the game out of reach with a two RBI error. The Bison attempted to steal and a bad throw from the catcher scored two Bison runs, making it 11-8.
Sophomore
Mitch Brown earned the start, throwing 4.1 innings, while allowing five runs and striking out three batters. Senior
Patrick Doyle (5-0) earned his fifth win, in relief with 1.2 innings thrown. Classmate
Nolan Sullivan, saw time with 1.0 innings and two strike outs. Sophomore
Johnathon Brzezicki (2) grabbed his second save, with 1.1 innings and three strike outs.
Nichols (18-14, 6-5 CNE) will travel to Weymouth, Mass. to face-off against Wentworth in Conference play. First pitch from Libby Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
