DUDLEY, Mass. (4/23/2025) – The Nichols College men's tennis program locked up the top seed in the upcoming 2025 CNE Tournament Wednesday, defeating Roger Williams University, 6-1 on Senior Day at the Robinson Tennis Courts.
Nichols improves to 10-11 (9-0 CNE) overall with the win, while the Hawks fall to 17-2 (8-1 CNE).
There was a playoff type atmosphere to the doubles play, with two-of-three matches being played to a tiebreaker. The first to finish was the third flight of
Leon Zeis and
Oscar Junyent, who narrowly beat their opponent, 7-6 by way of a 7-3 tiebreak. The No. 2 pairing of
Kerem Subasi and
Enzo Matos Balleux quickly followed with a 7-5 win, clinching the doubles point for Nichols. For good measure, the top flight of Caio Deickmann and
Richard Hartmann Luzio seized the victory at No. 1 doubles, coming back from a 5-2 deficit in their respective tiebreaker to complete the Bison sweep, 7-6.
The intensity continued well into singles play, with Roger Williams drawing even in the match with a victory at No. 1 singles by scores of 6-3 and 7-5. It was shortly after that when the Bison regained the lead following a decisive 6-2, 6-2 win at No. 5 singles from Matos Balleux, moments before Zeis called victory on court three via a 6-4, 6-2 decision to make it 3-1 Bison. The winning point came from Dieckmann at the No. 6 position, with the senior following a 6-2 opening set win with a closely contested 7-6 second set victory, winning by a 7-3 tiebreaker.
Jose Nunez then won at No. 2 singles (6-3, 6-2), while Subasi wrapped up the day with a three-set thriller at No. 4 singles (6-2, 6-7, 10-6).
The Bison will take a breather through the opening round of the tournament before hosting the winner of No. 5 seeded Gordon at No. 4 seed Endicott in the CNE Semifinal round on Wednesday, April 30
th at 4:00 PM.
