Baseball Sweeps Gordon in CNE Play

WENHAM, Mass. (4/19/2025) – Behind a 5-4 win in game one and an 11-10 come from behind win in game two the Nichols College Baseball team secured a sweep over Conference of New England (CNE) foe, Gordon College on Saturday afternoon.

Freshman Ryan Keating belted his second home run of the season, while plating three RBI and adding two runs scored himself in game two. Junior Julian Galvan was excellent from the batter's box going 4-7 with a pair of RBI in the games.

Game 1: Nichols 5 Gordon 4

The Bison scored all five of their runs in the first three innings and held on for a 5-4 win. Three straight singles in the top of the first inning, scored Jerome from third. Keating then scored on a ground out to the shortstop for 2-0 Bison lead.

In the second inning, the Bison stretched their lead to 3-0 with a sacrifice fly from Keating, who scored senior Andrew Croteau from third base. In the third inning, Croteau singled to center field and scored Miller from third base. Junior Julian Galvan beat out a double play ball and scored sophomore Anthony Hackert.

Gordon did not go away as the Bison bats went quiet and the Fighting Scots offense came alive in the bottom of the fourth inning. Gordon opened the inning with a double and then a single through the right side scored the first Gordon run.

In the sixth inning, Gordon plated two more runs to cut the lead to 5-3 after six innings. Gordon was not done there and continued to add pressure, scoring another run in the eighth inning as well to cut it to 5-4 Bison.

Nichols looked to their bullpen to close things out. Senior Tyler Moniz-Witten entered with one out in the eighth and allowed one hit, as the Bison hung on to beat the Fighting Scots, 5-4.

Senior John Steed (5-1) earned another win for the Bison, with 7.1 innings pitched striking out seven batters, while allowing four runs on nine hits. Moniz-Witten (2) secured his second save of the season in 1.2 innings of relief.

Game 2: Nichols 11 Gordon 10

The Gordon offense stayed hot into game two. The Bison scored two runs in the first inning. Miller doubled to center field and scored Keating in the process. A single off the bat of Hacker doubled up the Bison lead, 2-0 after one inning of play.

A walk in the bottom of the third and then a triple from Gordon that scored both runners on an error, pulled Gordon level, 2-2. A four run fourth inning gave Gordon their first lead of the afternoon at 6-2. A double and then a single put runners on first and second. Senior Ben Jerome then grounded out and scored freshman Collin Harty, making it 6-3. Two more runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning, extended the lead to 8-3.

The Bison bats came alive in the top of the sixth inning with an eight-run inning to regain the lead. Nichols scored their first run after a walk and two singles to load the bases. Sophomore Adam Pivacek earned an RBI with a sacrifice fly, making it 8-4. Harty singled up the middle to score Miller and then a single from Galvan added another RBI, making it 8-6 Gordon.

With two outs still in the inning, Jerome walked to reload the bases. The Bison scored on a passed ball to cut the lead to one, 8-7. Keating then launched a three-run home run to clear the base and give the Bison their first lead since the first inning, 10-8. Flynn continued the inning with a double to right center. Miller then reached on a fielding error and scored Flynn in the process. Nichols led 11-8 into the bottom of the sixth inning.

The runs on both sides continued with a pair of runs for the Fighting Scots, to cut into to Bison lead, 11-10. The Bison once again turned the bullpen to secure the win and it was sophomore Johnathon Brzezicki who answered the call throwing 2.0 innings of hit-less baseball to shut down Gordon and secure the sweep over the Fighting Scots 11-10.

Senior Patrick Doyle (4-0) earned the win while Brzezicki (1) secured his first save of the season for the win.

Nichols (16-13, 6-4 CNE) will return home on Tuesday afternoon for a CNE matchup against Hartford. First pitch from the Nichols Baseball Field is set for 3:30 p.m.
