DUDLEY, Mass. (4/14/2025) - The Nichols College Baseball team hit four home runs as they cruised to an 18-13 win over the Worcester Polytechnic Institute on Monday afternoon from the Nichols Baseball Field in non-conference action. The Bison registered 20 hits in the win.
Sophomore
Anthony Hackert was a perfect 4-4 with an RBI and three runs scored. Senior
Ben Jerome batted 3-4 with two RBI and three runs scored, while junior
Liam Flynn also added three hits (3-5) with 2 RBI.
Seniors
Karl Miller,
Stanley Cipkas, sophomore
Adam Pivacek, and freshman
Collin Harty all homered in the game, including collegiate firsts for Cipkas, Pivacek, and Harty.
The Engineers opened the game with a single through the right side, scoring the games first run. The Bison responded in the bottom half of the first inning. After Jerome reached on a single, Miller lifted a two run home run to left center field to take a 2-1 lead. WPI evened the score at 2-2 in the top of the second inning on a sacrifice fly.
Another two runs scored for the Bison, with a single from freshman
Ryan Keating, who scored Jerome on an error. Flynn then plated Keating on a single down the right field line. Nichols led 4-2 headed to the third inning, however the Engineers did not go away quietly, scoring three runs in the third inning to regain their lead, 5-4.
A five run fourth inning from Nichols opened the game wide open. Flynn then singled through the right side, scoring Hackert. Flynn and Keating then advanced on a wild pitch, to place runners on second and third. Pivacek then lifted the game's second home run to right field, extending the lead to 9-5 Bison.
The Bison offense was not done there, scoring two more runs in the fifth inning, including Harty's solo shot to center field. The sixth inning, saw the Bison add another six runs to take a 17-5 led. WPI once again battled back with five runs in the eighth inning, but Cipkas added his first home run bottom of the eighth to give Nichols 18 runs.
Three more runs from the Engineers in the top of ninth, made it 18-13 before the Bison were able to secure the win.
Senior
Patrick Doyle (3-0) earned the win for the Bison, throwing 4.2 innings in relief. He struck-out four batters, while allowing three hits and walking one. Senior
Salvatore D'Anna earned the start going 2.1 innings. The Bison saw seniors
Sean Ryan,
Tyler Moniz-Witten, and freshman
Josh Warming and Ashoton Hammond also saw action in the game.
Nichols (14-11, 4-4 CNE) will travel to Trinity College on Tuesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:30. p.m.
