WEST HARTFORD, Conn. (4/1/2025) – Despite 16 hits and scoring eight runs, the Nichols College Baseball team dropped a Conference of New England (CNE) match-up at the hands of the University of Hartford on Tuesday afternoon from Fiondella Field. The Hawks walked off the Bison in the 10
th inning, 9-8.
Freshman
Collin Harty went 3-4 with four RBI to lead the way for the Bison. Seniors
Ben Jerome and
Karl Miller each went 3-5 with two RBI as well. Teammate
Andrew Croteau tripled and scored two runs.
Nichols grabbed an early lead in the top of the first inning after a Miller single scored freshman
Ryan Keating. The Bison lasted until a four-run second inning, saw the Hawks take the lead, 4-1. Back-to-back two run innings, allowed Nichols regain the lead.
Junior
Julian Galvan singled to kick off the inning, and a double down the left field line off the bat of Jerome, plated Galvan. Miller then grounded out and scored Jerome in the process. Nichols trailed 4-3 after the third inning.
Nichols continued to add pressure in the fourth inning as well. Sophomore
Anthony Hackert singled to open the inning and Croteau doubled to place runners on second and third with no outs. Harty delivered for the Bison, with a single, scoring Croteau and Hackert as the Bison took a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning.
Nichols added another run in the sixth inning, to take a 6-4 lead. Hartford's bats answered with three runs in the bottom half of the inning, taking a 7-6 lead after six innings.
The Bison leveled the score in the top of the seventh inning, when Harty singled again, this time scoring Miller from second base making it 7-7. Nichols grabbed the lead in the top of the ninth inning, with a bases loaded walk to take an 8-7 Bison lead. Hartford answered with a two out double to score a run to tie the game and extra innings were needed.
The extra frame, the Bison went down swinging and Hartford saw a single and walk, before another single scored the game winning run as the Hawks walked the Bison off 9-8 in CNE play.
Senior
Salvatore D'Anna earned the start, throwing 2.0 innings, allowing four runs on four hits. Teammate and reigning CNE Pitcher of the Week,
John Steed threw 3.0 innings in relief, allowing no runs, on no hits, and striking out one batter. Freshman
Tim Hudson (1-2) shouldered the loss, with 1.1 innings pitched.
Nichols (8-10, 1-4 CNE) welcome Dean College to the Nichols College Baseball Field on Wednesday afternoon. First pitch is set for 3:30 p.m.
