Summer Klein eclipsed 1,000 career points on Wednesday night, helping the Nichols College women's basketball team to a dominant 93-51 conference win over Wentworth Institute of Technology at the Nichols Athletic Center.
The Bison improve to 13-11 (6-11 CNE) overall, while the Leopards fall to 2-22 (0-16 CNE) with the loss.
Klein scored 14 points in the win, going 6-of-12 (50.0%) from the field with six steals, four rebounds and three assists.
Abrianna Vazquez led the offense with 21 points on 8-of-18 (44.4%) shooting, also adding in six assists and a pair of steals, while
Alyvia Smith posted 11 points with four rebounds, and two steals. As a team, the Bison shot 37-of-75 (49.3) from the field, 9-of-24 (37.5) from three, and 10-of-15 (66.7%) from the free throw line, and combined for 25 steals.
Nichols began the first quarter with a dominant 12-0 run, as Vazquez and Smith each hit shots from behind the arc. The Leopards finally broke the ice at 4:43 with a driving layup, but had it promptly followed by another Smith triple to make it a 15-2 score, ultimately giving Nichols enough of a cushion to end the quarter leading by eight, 21-13.
The teams traded baskets through the first several minutes of the second, until Nichols mounted a 13-0 run midway through to stretch their lead to 18 points at 37-19, with Vazquez and Smith continuing their hot shooting from three range. Wentworth answered with a single layup at the 2:30 mark, only for Nichols to put up another 11 unanswered point to close out the half, resulting in a 48-21 host lead at the intermission.
Out of the locker room, the Bison outscored the Leopards 10-2 over the opening four minutes of the third, bringing their lead to a whopping 35 points at 58-23. Then, at 4:56, Klein reached her 1,000-career point milestone with an unassisted jumper, making it a 37-point ballgame. Nichols would go on to maintain their 37-point lead heading into the fourth quarter, with Cali Mello hitting a final triple in the waning seconds.
The Bison went on to out-battle the Leopards in a high-scoring fourth quarter by a 25-20 margin, resulting in the eventual 93-51 victory.
The Bison will wrap up their season on Saturday, February 22
nd with a road tilt at Suffolk University (12-12, 7-10 CNE). Tip-off is slated for 1:00 PM at Smith Court in Boston, Massachusetts.
