BOSTON, Mass. (2/22/2025) - The Nichols College women's basketball team wrapped up the 2024-25 season with razor-thin CNE loss at Suffolk University, 80-79 on Saturday afternoon at Smith Court.
The Bison close out the campaign with a 13-12 (6-12 CNE) overall record.
Graduate student guard
Abrianna Vazquez led the night with a game-high 28 points on 8-of-22 () shooting, while also registering two rebounds, two steals and a block in her final collegiate game.
Angie Coletti ended the year with a bang, scoring a career-best 14 points with three boards.
Alyvia Smith scored 13 points, with six rebounds, two steals and two assists.
Summer Klein, also playing her final collegiate game, hauled in a team-high eight rebounds. As a team, the Bison shot 29-of-77 (37.7%) from the floor, making eight baskets from three-point range and scoring 25 points off turnovers.
The teams battled each other to an 11-11 tie in the first quarter, before Suffolk rattled off five quick points to take a 16-11 lead with 3:40 to go. The Bison remained close behind, as a Vazquez jumper followed by a Coletti layup a minute later helped Nichols pull to within two points, 19-17. Suffolk would go on to own a 23-20 lead after one after hitting a pair of late free throws.
In the second quarter, Suffolk continued to maintain the upper hand, extending its lead to as many as 12 points at 40-28 with 3:00 to play in the half. However, the Bison quickly slashed Suffolk's lead in half thanks to consecutive threes from Vazquez and
Adriana Romano, helping Nichols close the gap to 42-36 at the break.
Suffolk re-opened a nine-point lead early in the third quarter, but were met by a swift response from the Bison in the form of a 7-0 run to pull back within two, 48-46 with Vazquez accounting for five of the points. As play continued, the Bison remained close behind the Rams up until the buzzer, eventually tying the score at 55-55 on a final
Tianna Fernandez jumper to close the quarter.
Suffolk ran the score up to 64-55 to open the fourth quarter, scoring nine unanswered points across a three-minute span. However, Nichols refused to go down so easily, as they fought their way back in to later tie the score a second time at 77-77, before eventually claiming the lead over the Rams 79-78 on a Vazquez free-throw with 00:35 left in the game. It all came down to the final possession for Suffolk, who scored the go-ahead basket with all of 00:13 remaining to secure the win, 80-79.
