DUDLEY, MASS. – The Nichols College women's volleyball team dropped in a tough conference matchup against Gordon College (15-25,16-25,17-25) in their final home match of the season at the Nichols Athletic Center.
With the loss, the Bison record drops to 8-18 (2-7 CNE) and the Fighting Scots move to 20-8 (6-3 CNE).
Senior
Kya Burdier and junior
Jhudny Pierre led the offensive charge for the Bison, each recording six kills. Seniors
Melina Bezati and
Maille Ianniruberto added five kills apiece to bolster the attack. Bezati also made an impact from the service line, landing three aces, and anchored the defense with 14 digs. Ianniruberto once again paced the team in blocks with two, while graduate student
Ruby St. Onge distributed a team-high 21 assists.
Gordon College came out strong to open the match, jumping to an early 6–2 lead. The Bison, determined to stay within reach, responded with Junior
Elizabeth Mullen adding an ace and kills from Ianniruberto and Burdier to close the gap to three . The Fighting Scots answered with a 6–2 run of their own, extending their advantage to seven. Despite a late push from Nichols, which included capitalizing on Gordon's errors and key points from
Melina Bezati, the Fighting Scots maintained control and closed out the set, 15–25.
The second set began much like the first, with Gordon jumping out to another 6–2 lead. The Bison found a bit more rhythm this time, winning key rallies behind kills from
Jhudny Pierre and
Elizabeth Mullen. Although the Fighting Scots maintained firm control throughout the set, Nichols showed a brief surge with back-to-back points from
Maille Ianniruberto and
Kya Burdier. However, Gordon quickly regained momentum, closing out the set with the final two points 16-25.
In the final set, both teams traded points early, with the Bison earning their first lead of the match at 4–3. The Fighting Scots quickly regained momentum, stringing together a run to pull ahead 7–4. Nichols continued to battle, fighting for every point and steadily chipping away at the deficit. The set remained tight as both teams exchanged attacks, but Gordon caught fire late, rattling off seven straight points to put the game out of reach. A brief four-point surge from the Bison sparked hope for a comeback, but the Fighting Scots answered right back, closing out the set 25–17 and securing the 3–0 match victory.
The Bison will hit the road for their final matchup of the season, taking on conference opponent Wentworth Institute of Technology (20–4, 8–1 CNE) at Tansey Gymnasium on Saturday, November 8, at 11:00 am.
