DARTMOUTH, Mass. (10/31/2025) - The Nichols College field hockey team secured a 3-2 victory over non-conference host UMass Dartmouth on Thursday evening, highlighted by a two-goal fourth quarter to close out the regular season.
The win comes as the third in a row for the Bison, which is their first three-game winning streak since the 2019 campaign. Nichols improves to 6-13 (2-5 CNE) overall, while the Corsairs fall to 2-16 (0-5 LEC).
Both teams came out firing in the first quarter, with Nichols holding a narrow 3-2 edge in shots. Through the games opening 15 minutes, the Corsairs also received a look on two different penalty corners, but were unsuccessful in finding the back of the net on either, keeping the game scoreless.
After the 0-0 first quarter, the Corsairs quickly tried to change the tempo of the game with a goal just 19 seconds into the second period, putting them in front 1-0 early. However, Nichols countered just as quickly with
Kaelyn Casper notching her fifth goal of the season off a feed by
Emma Bianculli, locking the score back up at 1-1 less than a minute later. Play eventually mellowed back out, until a late goal by the hosts with just 2:16 left in the half put the Corsairs back in front 2-1, which would be the difference at the break.
After a scoreless third quarter, the Bison picked up their intensity in the fourth by firing off back-to-back goals less than two minutes apart, giving them their first lead of the evening, which they would not concede. The first came in the 54
th minute off a shot from
Gabby Couillard for her second strike of the season, courtesy of an assist by
Brooke Morin. Then,
Lily Gibson stretched her scoring streak to three consecutive games with the game winner in the 56
th minute of play, her team-leading sixth of the season, with Couillard adding the helper.
In the cage,
Jessa Altemose (5-9) made eight saves for the victory, playing the full 60 minutes. The Bison finished the evening with the advantage in total shots (24-10) and penalty corners (7-4).
The Bison turn their attention to the 2025 CNE Tournament, with a first-round meeting at No. 3 University of New England (11-8, 5-2 CNE) on Saturday, November 1
st at 1:00 PM.
