BIDDEFORD, Maine (1/18/2025) – The Nichols College women's hockey team snapped their six-game losing streak with a 1-1 tie in Conference of New England (CNE) play against the University of New England on Saturday night from the Harold Alfond Forum.
Junior
Taylor Breen scored her first collegiate goal in the second period. Senior
McKenzie Muir was excellent once again in between the pipes for the Bison stopping 33 shots in the tie.
The Nor'easters struck first in the second period after the initial stop was made from Muir, the rebound beat her over the right shoulder for a 1-0 UNE lead at the 5:01 mark of the second period.
The Bison answered right back, after Breen intercepted a pass and raced the other way. Breen fired a wrist shot from the top of the circle past the netminder for her first collegiate goal. The Bison outshot the Nor'easters 11-8 in the second period, but the game remained tied at 1-1 after 4 minutes.
Three periods were not enough for either team and overtime was needed. The Bison started overtime on the penalty kill after a late penalty in the third period gave UNE a player advantage. Neither team scored in overtime and a shootout was needed for the extra point.
UNE scored on their first shot of the shootout and that was all that was needed as the Nor'easter netminder stopped all three Bison shooters to secure the extra point in the Conference standings.
Graduate student
Grace Melanson dominated the face off circle once again going 18-28 in the game to lead all skaters. Nichols was a perfect 4-4 on the penalty kill including a kill in overtime but went 0-5 on the power-play.
Nichols will travel to Boston to face off against Suffolk on Friday, January 24, with puck drop set at 5:40 p.m.
